3. Install the air pump

- you can also experiment with planting grass cuttings, I tried to cut mint with a foam collar. This is a sponge cylinder with a slot in the middle, into which you can cut seedlings or cuttings, I have a free one with a clean pot.

The much-needed oxygen for roots is provided by air pore spaces in soil, and in recirculating hydroponic systems, water is aerated as it is pumped around. This can be fixed in a DWC system by using an air pump with an air stone attached (common in fish tanks) to maintain an oxygen-rich environment in the water. In DWC systems, lettuce, kale, chard, bok choy, basil, and parsley are the best plants to grow. These are all relatively top-heavy plants. Growing tall plants, such as tomatoes, can be challenging in DWC systems because the roots are not well anchored. If you do manage to grow them, you’ll need the appropriate supports to keep the plant upright. Many people discover that deeper buckets and storage containers work well for these systems because the nutrient solution will be more stable the deeper the water reservoir. In smaller reservoirs, fluctuations in pH and nutrient concentration are more likely, and you will also need to top off the water more frequently. Your container shouldn’t be able to let light in because doing so increases the likelihood that algae will grow in your water. We had this 55l opaque storage container left over from a previous project, so I used it. In hindsight, I should have chosen a deeper container, but this will do just fine for my needs of growing leafy greens. 2. Make holes in the container’s lid with a drill. The plants will be grown in net pots, which have numerous openings for the roots to pass through. The lid of the container where the net pots will be placed needs to have holes drilled into it next. The only specialized tool required for this build is a hole saw, which is both inexpensive and simple to use. You must use net pots that are larger than the hole in order to prevent them from falling through. You can drill several holes if your container is wider than mine is. Planning is key in this situation; I spaced the holes 15 cm apart to account for the size of the mature plants. To create a single plant system in a 20-liter bucket (which is perfect for growing larger plants like tomatoes or zucchini), I recommend drilling a single hole in the center of the container. Pro-Tip: When drilling holes in your lid, place some wood underneath to stop the saw from jolting and shattering the plastic. 3. Put your air pump together. The air pump needs to stay away from the reservoir. It will have a check valve, which makes sure that if the pump is turned off, water won’t be sucked back up. You must keep the pump above the water if one is not included. A length of tubing should be used to connect the air stone and check valve, with the arrow on the check valve facing the air stone. The check valve should then be connected to the air pump in the same way. 4. Add nutrients, fill the reservoir, and modify the pH When fully loaded, the system can be quite heavy, so be sure to choose a location for your container before filling it! Leave 1-2 cm at the top after nearly filling it with water. Following the directions on your bottle, add your hydroponic nutrients to the water next. Mine instructed me to add 110ml of each A and B nutrient to my 55l container, which I did by using a measuring cup. The pH of the water also needs to be adjusted. Measure the pH with a pH meter; tap water will typically have a pH of 6.5 to 7.5. Most herbs and vegetables need a nutrient solution that is slightly acidic. Using drops of phosphoric acid in a pipette (commercially marketed as “pH Down” for hydroponic use), you can lower the pH to 5.5–6.5. When working with pH-down solutions, wear gloves and make sure to thoroughly mix the solution before using. 5. Put the system together. Place the air stone in the reservoir after plugging in the air pump. You’re almost done when you tightly fasten the top lid. It’s easy to add plants; I just put some plants in the net pots that were grown in rockwool plugs. Although using a mess-free medium is recommended, you can also use seedlings that have been grown in soil. A cleaner alternative is to use hydroton clay pellets or rockwool plugs. I’m done! Here are some urgent maintenance tasks, In Use: My DWC Hydroponic System Making sure the water level doesn’t fall too far is crucial, especially when the plants are young. As long as the roots receive enough water, they should be able to grow. Every time you top off the water, check the pH levels to keep an eye on them. I top off my water using a used 2L water bottle so I can precisely measure the amount I am adding. I pour 4ml of each A and B nutrient into the reservoir for every 2L of water I use. Every 14 to 21 days, clean the reservoir and refill it with fresh water. Extra Advice If you don’t have a way to multiply young seedlings, you can sow seeds directly and watch them grow in the system. To do this, insert a rockwool plug into a net pot along with one or more seeds. Make sure the plug doesn’t dry out at all because this might hinder germination. You can also experiment with growing herb cuttings; I used a foam collar to grow a mint cutting. I received mine free with the net pots; it is a sponge cylinder with a slit down the middle that you can insert seedlings or cuttings into. I removed the bottom leaves from a mint stem that I had cut under a leaf node before inserting it into a foam collar and then a net pot. To prevent drying out, it is suggested that you cover the cutting with a bottomless plastic bottle. last thoughts So that’s how you can create a basic hydroponic system at home. Some of the supplies may already be in your home, and you can start growing food at home with the help of an old bucket or storage container. If you don’t have a lid, you can make holes for plants to grow from in a sheet of polystyrene packaging. You can drill several holes if your container is wider than mine is. Planning is key in this situation; I spaced the holes 15 cm apart to account for the size of the mature plants. Pro-Tip: When drilling holes in your lid, place some wood underneath to stop the saw from jolting and shattering the plastic.
3. Put your air pump together.
The air pump needs to stay away from the reservoir. It will have a check valve, which makes sure that if the pump is turned off, water won’t be sucked back up. You must keep the pump above the water if one is not included.
A length of tubing should be used to connect the air stone and check valve, with the arrow on the check valve facing the air stone. The check valve should then be connected to the air pump in the same way.
4. Add nutrients, fill the reservoir, and modify the pH
When fully loaded, the system can be quite heavy, so be sure to choose a location for your container before filling it! Leave 1-2 cm at the top after nearly filling it with water.
Following the directions on your bottle, add your hydroponic nutrients to the water next. Mine instructed me to add 110ml of each A and B nutrient to my 55l container, which I did by using a measuring cup.
The pH of the water also needs to be adjusted. Measure the pH with a pH meter; tap water will typically have a pH of 6.5 to 7.5. Most herbs and vegetables need a nutrient solution that is slightly acidic.
Using drops of phosphoric acid in a pipette (commercially marketed as “pH Down” for hydroponic use), you can lower the pH to 5.5–6.5. When working with pH-down solutions, wear gloves and make sure to thoroughly mix the solution before using.
5. Put the system together.
Place the air stone in the reservoir after plugging in the air pump. You’re almost done when you tightly fasten the top lid.
It’s easy to add plants; I just put some plants in the net pots that were grown in rockwool plugs. Although using a mess-free medium is recommended, you can also use seedlings that have been grown in soil. A cleaner alternative is to use hydroton clay pellets or rockwool plugs.

Making sure the water level doesn’t fall too far is crucial, especially when the plants are young. As long as the roots receive enough water, they should be able to grow.
