getting started with hydroponics

are you interested in hydroponics or growing at home, but don’t know where to start? Do you want to create your own system from recycled materials from your home?

Growing hydroponics at home has many advantages: regular supplies of fresh, nutritious products will definitely save you from numerous trips to the supermarket!

there are many different hydroponic systems (see my previous blog explains this). In this blog we will discuss the easiest to understand. I will explain how the Hydroponics system for growing deep-sea crops works and how you can build it yourself in the shortest possible time.

which hydroponic system is best suited for beginners?

deep-sea culture (DWC) is the simplest type of hydroponic system that can be built and maintained at home. In this system, plants grow with their roots immersed directly in nutrient-rich water.

For home gardeners, this can be achieved by planting in large opaque storage containers or buckets. Commercial farmers use rafts floating on a large layer of water; they work like conveyor belts with the addition of young plants on one side, they will move until they are ready to harvest on the other side.

the absence of moving parts or water circulation makes DWC systems relatively simple and inexpensive to assemble. The water in the DWC system is not recycled, it remains in the tank during the entire service life of the installation. This means that you have to aerate the water to replenish the oxygen used by the roots.

in the soil, the air vapor space provides much-needed oxygen to the roots, and in hydroponics recirculation systems, water is aerated by pumping. We can fix this in the DWC system by using an air pump with an attached air stone (used in aquariums) so that the water remains oxygen-rich.

what can I develop in my DWC system?

the best plants to grow in the DWC system are lettuce, cabbage, radish, Bok choy, basil and parsley. All these are not very heavy plants. In the DWC system, the roots are poorly anchored, which means that growing tall plants like tomatoes can be difficult, if you grow them, you will need the right support to keep the plants upright.

    • storage container or bucket
    • clean pot
    • air pump with air stone
    • liquid power with hard water (a & B)
    • pH lowered
    • pH meter
    • measuring cups
    • pipette
    • ring saw with mandrel
    • drill

1. Find a suitable container for the system

many believe that deeper storage containers and buckets are well suited for this system, because the deeper the water tank, the more stable the nutrient solution.

Fluctuations in nutrient concentrations and pH are more likely in small bodies of water, and you should also replenish your water supplies more regularly.

Light should not penetrate into your container, otherwise there is a high risk that algae will grow in your water. I used this 55-liter opaque storage container left over from a previous project. Looking back, I would have preferred to use a container deeper, but for my purposes of growing greenery, this would have worked well.

2. drill a hole in the lid of the container

The plant will grow in a clean pot, it is a pot with many holes for root growth. The next step is to drill holes in the lid of the container where the mesh pot will be located.

This requires the only specialized tool that you will need in this production – an annular saw, it is quite affordable and easy to use. The size of the mesh pot you are using should be larger than the hole so that it does not fall.

if you use a container wider than mine, you can drill several holes. It is important to plan carefully here: I made holes at a distance of 15 cm from each other so that they correspond to the size of an adult plant.

If you’re using a 20-liter bucket, I suggest drilling one hole in the middle to create a single plant system (they’re great for growing something bigger, like tomatoes or zucchini).

professional advice: put some wood under the lid when drilling holes, this will prevent the saw from jerking and tearing the plastic.

3. Install the air pump

    • the air pump must remain outside the tank. It comes with a check valve, this ensures that the pump does not suck water back in when it is turned off. If it is not supplied in the kit, you must keep the pump above the water level.
    • connect the air stone and the check valve along the length of the tube, making sure that the arrow on the check valve faces the air stone. Then connect the check valve to the air pump in the same way.

4. Fill the tank, add nutrients and adjust the pH

    • the system can be very heavy when filling, so make sure you decide where your container will be located before filling it! Fill almost completely with water, leaving 1-2 cm of free space at the top.
    • next, you need to add hydroponic nutrients to the water, following the instructions on the bottle. My friend advised me to add 2 ml per liter of each nutrient a and b; using a measuring cup, I added 110 ml of each to my 55-liter container.
    • we also need to adjust the pH of the water. Using a pH meter, measure the pH; the pH value of tap water will be somewhere from 6.5 to 7.5. Most vegetables and herbs need a slightly acidic nutrient solution.
    • you can lower the pH to 5.5-6.5 with phosphoric acid drops using a pipette (marketed as “pH down” for hydroponic use). When working with pH drops, wear gloves and do not forget to mix the solution well after application.

5. system build

    • install the air pump and place the air stone in the tank. Fasten the lid on top and you’re almost ready.
    • adding your plants is very simple, I put some plants planted in stone wool stoppers in clean pots. You can also use seedlings planted in the ground, but we recommend using an environment that does not create a mess. Stone wool stoppers or hydrotonic clay pellets are a cleaner solution.

how do I maintain my hydroponic system?

everything is ready! Now about some mandatory maintenance requirements.
My DWC Hydroponics System in action

    • it is very important to make sure that the water level does not fall too much, especially if the plant is young. As long as the water has sufficient contact with the roots, they should grow well.
    • monitor the pH level by checking it every time you top up the water.
    • I use an old 2-liter bottle to top up the water to know exactly how much water I’m adding. For every 2 liters of water I use, I add 4 ml of each a&B nutrient to the tank.
    • clean the tank and replace it with fresh water every 14-21 days.

additional tips

how to sow seeds directly into your DWC system

    • if you do not have the ability to propagate young seedlings, you can directly sow seeds so that they germinate in the system.
    • to do this, place a stone wool stopper in a clean pot and place one or two seeds in the stopper. Make sure that the cork does not dry out at all, otherwise it may affect germination.

how to grow cuttings in your DWC system

    • you can also experiment with planting grass cuttings, I tried to cut mint with a foam collar. This is a sponge cylinder with a slot in the middle, into which you can cut seedlings or cuttings, I have a free one with a clean pot.
    • I cut the mint stem under the leaf node, and then remove the bottom leaf and put it in the foam collar, and then clean the pot. It is recommended to place a plastic bottle without a bottom over the slicing to prevent it from drying out.

Final thoughts

So here’s how you can build a simple hydroponic system for yourself at home. Perhaps you already have some materials in your current home, old storage containers or buckets can be reused to start growing from home.

If you don’t have a lid, you can cut a hole out of a sheet of polystyrene packaging for growing from a plant.

if you are getting acquainted with hydroponics for the first time, the complexity of some systems on the market can be overwhelming.

That’s why we recommend starting with a simple one, the DWC system gives beginners the opportunity to do this. They are unpretentious in maintenance and can be placed anywhere where there is enough light, indoors or outdoors.

Grow Room Watering System Indoor Plants

Grow Room Watering System. The most recent smart home automation system that takes care of your plants while you’re away is an automatic watering system. If you want a low-maintenance garden but don’t have the time to care for the plants, these gadgets are great replacements.

For indoor plants, an automatic watering system can determine when and how much water is required based on factors such as the type of soil, temperature, humidity, and light intensity. The majority of automated watering systems designed for indoor plants include irrigation timers that can change the watering cycles and schedules on their own.

Grow Room Watering System

The water sprinklers only need to be placed at the base and left alone, unlike manual drippers which operate continuously. When buying an automatic watering system for your indoor plants, be sure to keep the following in mind.

  • One of the most important components of automatic watering systems for your indoor plants is a timer. Timer devices come in two varieties: mechanical and digital. Digital timers are more sophisticated, have more features, and are easier to use. Mechanical timers are less expensive options that rarely need installation.

Purchase Guide

The variety of automatic watering systems for indoor plants that are available often confounds buyers. Others might not be able to water as many plants as they would like to because some of them don’t fit the kind they want.

Additionally, some automatic water systems don’t fit in the available space. Certain models might lack some crucial components, rendering them less than ideal. Therefore, we’ve provided a list of features to consider before choosing your ideal automatic water system.

1. Timer

One essential component to look for when purchasing an automatic water system is a timer. The intervals at which the plants must be watered are set by the timer.

Flow of water:

Timers: The following list includes some fundamental timers for irrigation systems.

  1. Mechanical: Although this type of timer is an old one, it is still widely used. They are very useful and have a spout, faucet, or other attached water source that controls the water flow based on the user’s needs. These timers are less expensive and rarely require installation. They are not very precise, which is one of their drawbacks. Additionally, because they depend on a faucet, a drop in water pressure or a change in temperature can cause it to break.
  2. Digital: In this case, a battery-operated, compact alternative is the digital timer. It is so small that it can hardly fit in the box. You can plug it in anywhere there is an electrical outlet, which simplifies your life. It can preset schedules and regulate water flow based on humidity levels. You can even program multiple watering cycles for your plant friends using this timer. They always require electricity to function, and you must replace them every year, which is one of their drawbacks.
  3. Smart Timers: As a plant enthusiast, the Smart Timers are an additional feature that makes life simpler. You can control and modify the watering schedule using this feature from a smart device, such as a tablet, laptop, or phone. Additionally, you can modify the watering schedule in accordance with site conditions such as the time of year, the climate, and the water supply. In order to create and optimize watering schedules, you can also feed sophisticated watering algorithms, which will help you save time and money. Additionally, you can get reports on your water usage and real-time notifications. Additionally, you can connect it to leading smart home platforms like Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa.

2. Capacity

You should estimate how much water you’ll need before purchasing an automatic watering system for indoor plants. It will make sure you don’t waste any or run out. The number of pots that can be watered automatically ranges from 1 to 15. The number of pots you want to water at once should guide your product choice.

3. Numbers for Valve Outlets

The additional valve outlets will enable you to set various watering schedules for various garden areas. For instance, if one area of your garden requires more water during the summer because fungus growth is likely there, and another area requires more water during the winter. One can easily control the device by setting different watering schedules for various sections when there are multiple valve outlets.

4. Various Watering Durations Can Be Set

When creating the watering schedules for the garden, water duration is a crucial factor to take into account. The required amount of time in the water can range from 5 minutes to 5 hours. You can set the timer for 15 minutes in one section and 30 minutes in the other if you have multiple watering outlets and different watering durations.

Other Features

5. Rain Delay

Any hose timer must have a rain delay feature. The benefits of a rain delay feature are numerous. The rain delay feature can sense rains and the weather and is programmed to adjust the watering timing depending on the weather conditions, in contrast to the soil moisture detection sensors, which can measure the amount of moisture in the soil.

6. Automatic Timing Option

Although hose timers can automatically adjust the timing and schedule for watering, this does not imply that you cannot set manual watering cycles.

You can manually set the time for watering schedules that are unique to your garden using a variety of mechanical timers. Select a hose timer that automatically adjusts the watering intervals while still allowing you to manually set the designated cut-off date.

7. Waterproof Architecture

It might not be inexpensive, but choosing a hose timer with a waterproof body is always a good idea. It should be made of premium plastic and, on occasion, copper, which resists rust and moisture. The majority of digital timers are not waterproof.

As a result, you must exercise extra caution when working with them. As there is always a possibility that water will enter the battery charging port and harm the timer’s internal components. On the other hand, mechanical timers eliminate the possibility of such incidents.

8. LCDs Display

As you already know, a timer with an LCD display is now a common feature of auto watering systems. You can easily pre-program a watering schedule using a bright LCD screen. Both manual and automatic watering cycles can be configured.

A digital LCD timer may seem complicated to many of you, but the opposite is actually true. They look futuristic, are practical, and once you learn the keys, are simple to use. You can choose the ones that have a simple dial for adjusting the timing and schedule if you still find them confusing.

9. Dimensions of the Hose

Another factor you need to think about is the length of the hose that is included with the automatic watering system. The lengths of the hoses for these systems can vary. For instance, hoses made for indoor plants may be shorter than those made for outdoor plants or potted plants, which may have hoses up to 100 feet long. A hose that is 25 feet long should typically be adequate for home use. The size of the hose will also depend on how much of your garden needs to be watered.

The majority of automatic watering systems, though, allow you to lengthen the hose by connecting new hoses. You should still take into account purchasing a model with hose length that can reach all of your plants without requiring you to purchase an additional hose. Before investing in an automatic plant watering system, it is advised that you measure the length of your garden to be on the safe side.

10. The Movement of Water

Another crucial aspect to take into account is the water flow rate. If you purchase a system with a higher water flow rate than you require, the plants will perish from the use of too much water. However, if the water flow rate is slower than what you require, the plants won’t receive enough water and will eventually wither.

11. Power

Choose a system that will make sure it continues to function even if you are not there. The 2-way power is a wise decision because it guarantees that the system will continue to function even if one of the two power sources fails.

12. Price

It is best to browse the various products that are offered on the market. You might discover that there are different price points for automatic water systems. Knowing about the products in various price ranges will make it easier for you to stick to your spending limit.

Last Word

It can be difficult to choose the best automatic watering system for indoor plants out of the many available options. Read about all the products and the benefits and drawbacks associated with them to make the best decision. Look for the system’s power, capacity, water flow rate, and timer.

  1. Different water systems function in different ways, but in our opinion—and as a result of its simple installation, low maintenance requirements, and affordable price—the Raindrip R560DP Automatic Watering Kit is the best option.
  2. The DIY Micro Automatic Drip Irrigation Kit would come next on our list because it can give the plants the exact amount of water they need.
  3. The sPlant Big Power Automatic Drip Irrigation Kit, which has a pump that is five times more powerful, would be our third choice. You can contact us in the comments section below if you have any additional questions.

correct color

Sunlight contains the full spectrum of light, including all the colors of the rainbow: from red to yellow, blue and purple.

Like plants grown outdoors in the sun, indoor plants grow best under full-spectrum lamps that create a balance of cold and warm light that reproduces the natural solar spectrum.

They are great for seedlings, as well as ornamental plants, culinary herbs and other crops. All our plants grow lamps, stands and replacement lamps have a full range.

LED or neon?

Both emit full-spectrum light. However, LEDs are better suited for the environment and your wallet. Our product development team has developed energy-efficient, economical and efficient LED lights specifically to meet the demanding needs of plants (as opposed to multi-purpose LEDs).

They provide plants with bright full-spectrum light with additional bursts of blue light, stimulating stronger root growth, improving photosynthesis and providing peak growth. Enjoy healthy seedlings, houseplants, orchids and houseplants!

    • they are useful for your plants. high-tech LEDs, calibrated specifically for indoor cultivation.
    • they are very effective. LEDs consume half as much electricity and last 5 times longer than fluorescent lamps.
    • they are friendly to the Earth. mercury-free LED tubes do not break like glass, so fewer of them end up in landfills.

correct intensity

Our Vermont-made SunLite garden is available with LED or fluorescent lighting.

The intensity of the light received by the plant is determined by the brightness of the lamp and how close the plant is to the light source. Plants vary in their need for light intensity.

As a rule, plants growing in tropical or shady forests do not need as much light as plants that have developed in a dry and sunny climate, such as the Mediterranean or Southern Mexico.

Some flowering houseplants, such as African violets and begonias, prefer to be 10-12 inches away from the light source.

Deciduous plants, such as ivy or philodendron, can be placed 36 inches away from the light source. But many flowering plants, such as orchids, gardenias and oranges, as well as most vegetable crops, require much higher light intensity to thrive and bear fruit.

exact duration

What plants you grow, you need to give them a rest. When it’s dark, plants breathe, which is an important part of their growth process.

The ratio of resting time and active growth time affects many biological processes, including the growth rate and the setting of buds and fruits. The power supply with built-in timer makes it easy to set the correct duration.

Botanists usually divide plants into three categories related to their preferred length of day: short day, long day, or neutral day.

plants with a short day, such as chrysanthemums, kalanchoes, azaleas and begonias, will bloom with less than 12 hours of light per day. In fact, these plants usually have to go through a number of shorter days before they open their buds and bloom.

plants with a long day require 14 to 18 hours of light every day. Most seedlings for garden vegetables and flowers are one-day plants. When they don’t get enough light, they become pale and leggy.

plants that are neutral to daylight , including deciduous plants, geraniums, coleus and African violets, are usually content with 8-12 hours of light throughout the year.

what is an LED?

LEDs (light emitting diodes) create light when an electric current – a stream of electrons — passes through special materials called semiconductors.

As the name implies, semiconductors pass some, but not all, current. Crystals made of pure silicon do not conduct electricity.

But if a small amount of an additional substance, such as phosphorus, is introduced into the crystal, this disrupts the balance of the material and activates electrons in it.

When an electric current is applied to the crystal, part of this activation energy is released in the form of light. NASA has pioneered the use of LEDs for growing plants as a result of its research into the best lighting technology for growing edible plants in space.

how to choose an indoor growing kit?

Buying a tent growing kit is not so easy, because there are a few small details that you need to focus on, and they will come in handy later.

This guide highlights some important points that you should keep in mind when buying a tent growing kit.

    1. the size of your growing tent (how many plants do you want to plant)
    1. lamps for growing
    1. ventilation system

Let’s look at each of them:

Tent growing kits are available in various shapes and sizes. Sometimes it can be too difficult to choose the right size for your growing tent. But it will be better to remember how many plants you will plant in the available space, and decide on the appropriate size of the tent for cultivation.

The size you choose for your growing tent will depend on the density of the plants you will use for your plants. You can choose two different plant densities: one plant per square inch and the other is a quarter of a plant per square inch. And, of course, with different densities, the size of the tent set will vary.

grow lamps

Indoor growing is all that is needed for proper lighting with indoor growing lamps. There are various grow lamps, but the most popular are LED grow lamps. Also available are lamps for growing with an extended spectrum of action, as well as T5 fluorescent lamps, which are suitable for flowering plants.

LED growing lamps can be complicated, but fortunately, most tent growing kits are equipped with such equipment to provide the ideal amount of energy for growing different types of plants at different stages of their life cycle-from seedlings to the flowering stage!

There are many LED grow lamps available in terms of color and power. The power can vary from 200 watts to 1000 watts. Some lights come with a built-in timer and maintain a proper work schedule in the garden.

In addition, most of the tent growing kits are equipped with reflectors to maximize the effect of these lamps inside the tent.

ventilation system

The ventilation system in your tent growing kit will be basic, as it maintains the air flow inside the tent at an optimal level and protects your interior space from unpleasant odors. Ventilation is also useful when it gets very hot in your tent.

Your plants need good air exchange to grow healthy. These vents will control the temperature and humidity inside your tent. Such ventilation prevents the ingress of moisture, excess heat and mold.

These tent growing kits can be a source of unpleasant odors. Some are equipped with carbon filters to eliminate these odors, but a growing tent can easily handle the odors on its own with a proper ventilation system. The key point here is that air should circulate everywhere at a regular rate.

Our growing tent installation guide will teach you how to set up your own growing space if you still need it.

what else should be included in the tent-growing-kit?

The tent growing kit should include all the devices that you can use to assemble the tent and install it in place.

    • hangers for lamps
    • bolts and nuts for frame and fittings inside
    • the tent itself
    • everything you need to organize everything.

The best tent growing kits also include fans, timers, long hoses, carbon filters and other accessories. Make sure your tent growing kit has an instruction manual in case you get into trouble.

Installing a tent for growing is not difficult if everything you need is included. But sometimes there are some unknown parts and components in the kit, and you need to have some guidance on how to use these unknown components.

This tent growing kit can be useful for your indoor growing business. And the best one is the SuperCloset SuperNova indoor growing kit. This is a great choice for those who want to grow herbs and vegetables inside.

Installing a tent for indoor cultivation is a simple process. You just need the right tools and instructions to get the job done. Make sure you maintain conditions inside the natural tent pit for the best growth.

Best Hydroponic Grow Lights Indoor Garden

Best Hydroponic Grow Lights, What a stunning variety of hydroponic lamps are on the market today! This clear and simple guide will help you choose the one that best suits your garden.

Let’s talk about confusion! Just open the hydroponics catalog and you will quickly get lost in all the hoods, lamps, ballasts and timers offered.

Best Hydroponic Grow Lights

Best Hydroponic Grow Lights

Hydroponics lamp in a nutshell

  • good: T5 high power fluorescent light
  • better: HID (high-intensity discharge)
  • best: sun
  • new alternative: LED panel

Okay, maybe it’s just a little bit… here are the good things…

First we will explain how different hydroponics work and when to use them. Then, at the end, we offer you our selection of simple and inexpensive universal lighting systems!

How easy is it?

T5 fluorescent lamp

The T5 is a huge improvement over the “growing sticks” you’ll find at Walmart. Fluorescent lamps are good for lettuce, greens and most other herbs. We have had great success cooking lettuce using only T5s.Read more about these ” cool ” lamps here.

hidden hydroponics fixtures

Although concealed lamps emit a lot of heat, they are the best light sources available today for indoor hydroponics manufacturers. You can grow deciduous, flowering or fruiting plants under canopies.

They may be expensive, but we offer a universal system at a great affordable price below.

Read more about hidden lighting, as well as tips on power and electricity consumption here.

additional update: Make the most of your lighting expenses with the HID light Mover.

sunlight is the best

An open vegetable garden needs at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight; plus another 8-10 hours of bright light.

So, for your deep hydroponic garden, you will need to repeat this. Plan for 14-16 hours of bright artificial lighting, followed by 8-10 hours of darkness.

Plants, like you, need downtime in the dark to metabolize and rest. Set the hydroponic lamps on the timer for proper operation. Then install it and forget about it!

LED panel for growing

For many years, we recommend that you do not buy LED lights for your growing room. Why? This technology does not exist yet, and we believe that they are spending your hard-earned money (there are a lot of them).

You know what? LEDs are finally growing! Recent technological advances have made LED lighting fixtures for growing plants a viable alternative to hydroponic gardeners. Carefully read our brief overview of these lamps before purchasing.

After a long search and comparative purchases, we contacted a company that produces complete sets of converting lamps with a power of 400 watts, which we offer at super prices! See the photo below.

This highly recommended kit for a typical 4 x 4 inch garden includes:

  • 400W/HPP conversion lamp with hood
  • remote ballast
  • 400-watt HPS lamp
  • 400W MH conversion lamp (slimline)
  • heavy duty grounded timer

All this for less than $200! You can’t beat it for the combined light. Order your lighting kit here: HID Combo MH & HPS light Kit

We have tested and often use these kits, and they work just great!

disadvantage: the hood is a bit thin and boring in assembly. If you have money, then switch to a more expensive hood.

But for the price we are very happy with this lightweight kit. The ballast and cord are highly durable.

so that’s it… simplified hydroponic lighting! If you do not grow in a sunny greenhouse or on a sunny terrace, you will have to purchase additional lighting… otherwise, you will not get the impressive growth and harvest that Hydroponics is famous for.

How to begin using hydroponics

Do you want to grow plants at home or use hydroponics but are unsure where to begin? Do you want to create your own system using repurposed components from your house? The advantages of hydroponically growing at home are numerous: you won’t need to make as many trips to the grocery store if you have a steady supply of fresh, healthy produce!

There are numerous varieties of hydroponic systems (check out my previous blog explaining them). The easiest to understand will be covered in this blog. I’ll describe the operation of a Deep Water Culture hydroponic system and how you can quickly construct one for yourself.

Which hydroponic system is ideal for beginners?

The simplest hydroponic system you can set up and maintain at home is Deep Water Culture (DWC). The plants in this system develop with their roots completely submerged in nutrient-rich water. This can be accomplished by home growers by using big, opaque storage containers or buckets.

Commercial growers use floating rafts that act like conveyor belts, moving young plants from one side of the raft to the other until they are ready for harvest.

System for Deep Water Culture

DWC systems are relatively easy and inexpensive to construct because they don’t have any moving parts or recirculating water. Throughout the entire life of the plant, the water in DWC systems sits in the reservoir rather than being circulated. To replace the oxygen that the roots use, you must aerate the water.

The much-needed oxygen for roots is provided by air pore spaces in soil, and in recirculating hydroponic systems, water is aerated as it is pumped around. This can be fixed in a DWC system by using an air pump with an air stone attached (common in fish tanks) to maintain an oxygen-rich environment in the water.

In my DWC system, what can I grow?

In DWC systems, lettuce, kale, chard, bok choy, basil, and parsley are the best plants to grow. These are all relatively top-heavy plants. Growing tall plants, such as tomatoes, can be challenging in DWC systems because the roots are not well anchored. If you do manage to grow them, you’ll need the appropriate supports to keep the plant upright.

How to build a home hydroponic DWC system

Materials: (scroll down for some product suggestions with links) (scroll down for some product suggestions with links)

  • bucket or storage container
  • Pots net
  • airstone and airpump
  • Nutrients in Liquid Hard Water (A & B)
  • Down pH
  • pH scale
  • Beaker for measuring
  • Pipettes
  • arbor-equipped hole saw
  • Drill

1. Locate a system container that is appropriate.

Many people discover that deeper buckets and storage containers work well for these systems because the nutrient solution will be more stable the deeper the water reservoir. In smaller reservoirs, fluctuations in pH and nutrient concentration are more likely, and you will also need to top off the water more frequently.

Your container shouldn’t be able to let light in because doing so increases the likelihood that algae will grow in your water. We had this 55l opaque storage container left over from a previous project, so I used it. In hindsight, I should have chosen a deeper container, but this will do just fine for my needs of growing leafy greens.

2. Make holes in the container’s lid with a drill.

The plants will be grown in net pots, which have numerous openings for the roots to pass through. The lid of the container where the net pots will be placed needs to have holes drilled into it next. The only specialized tool required for this build is a hole saw, which is both inexpensive and simple to use. You must use net pots that are larger than the hole in order to prevent them from falling through.

You can drill several holes if your container is wider than mine is. Planning is key in this situation; I spaced the holes 15 cm apart to account for the size of the mature plants. To create a single plant system in a 20-liter bucket (which is perfect for growing larger plants like tomatoes or zucchini), I recommend drilling a single hole in the center of the container.

Pro-Tip: When drilling holes in your lid, place some wood underneath to stop the saw from jolting and shattering the plastic.

3. Put your air pump together.

The air pump needs to stay away from the reservoir. It will have a check valve, which makes sure that if the pump is turned off, water won’t be sucked back up. You must keep the pump above the water if one is not included.

A length of tubing should be used to connect the air stone and check valve, with the arrow on the check valve facing the air stone. The check valve should then be connected to the air pump in the same way.

4. Add nutrients, fill the reservoir, and modify the pH

When fully loaded, the system can be quite heavy, so be sure to choose a location for your container before filling it! Leave 1-2 cm at the top after nearly filling it with water.

Following the directions on your bottle, add your hydroponic nutrients to the water next. Mine instructed me to add 110ml of each A and B nutrient to my 55l container, which I did by using a measuring cup.

The pH of the water also needs to be adjusted. Measure the pH with a pH meter; tap water will typically have a pH of 6.5 to 7.5. Most herbs and vegetables need a nutrient solution that is slightly acidic.

Using drops of phosphoric acid in a pipette (commercially marketed as “pH Down” for hydroponic use), you can lower the pH to 5.5–6.5. When working with pH-down solutions, wear gloves and make sure to thoroughly mix the solution before using.

5. Put the system together.

Place the air stone in the reservoir after plugging in the air pump. You’re almost done when you tightly fasten the top lid.

It’s easy to add plants; I just put some plants in the net pots that were grown in rockwool plugs. Although using a mess-free medium is recommended, you can also use seedlings that have been grown in soil. A cleaner alternative is to use hydroton clay pellets or rockwool plugs.

How should my hydroponic system be maintained?

I’m done! Here are some urgent maintenance tasks, In Use: My DWC Hydroponic System

Making sure the water level doesn’t fall too far is crucial, especially when the plants are young. As long as the roots receive enough water, they should be able to grow.

Every time you top off the water, check the pH levels to keep an eye on them.

I top off my water using a used 2L water bottle so I can precisely measure the amount I am adding. I pour 4ml of each A and B nutrient into the reservoir for every 2L of water I use.

Every 14 to 21 days, clean the reservoir and refill it with fresh water.

Extra Advice

How to directly plant seeds in your DWC system

If you don’t have a way to multiply young seedlings, you can sow seeds directly and watch them grow in the system.

To do this, insert a rockwool plug into a net pot along with one or more seeds. Make sure the plug doesn’t dry out at all because this might hinder germination.

How to use your DWC system to grow cuttings

You can also experiment with growing herb cuttings; I used a foam collar to grow a mint cutting. I received mine free with the net pots; it is a sponge cylinder with a slit down the middle that you can insert seedlings or cuttings into.

I removed the bottom leaves from a mint stem that I had cut under a leaf node before inserting it into a foam collar and then a net pot. To prevent drying out, it is suggested that you cover the cutting with a bottomless plastic bottle.

last thoughts

So that’s how you can create a basic hydroponic system at home. Some of the supplies may already be in your home, and you can start growing food at home with the help of an old bucket or storage container. If you don’t have a lid, you can make holes for plants to grow from in a sheet of polystyrene packaging.

The complexity of some of the systems on the market can be overwhelming if you’re new to hydroponics. We advise beginners to start off small because a DWC system enables them to do so. They require little upkeep and can be positioned indoors or outdoors, wherever there is enough light.
