Hydroponic Air Stone is Needed ?
Hydroponic Air Stone, Did you know that your plants can overwinter? Exactly. And it’s not the same as just over-watering indoor plants. If you overfill plants, you risk causing problems such as mold and root rot. If you smoke your plant, it actually lacks oxygen, like a drowning person.
This is where the air stones come into play for your hydroponics growing strategy. In this article you will learn the basics of what air stones are and why you need them. You will also learn exactly what role oxygen plays in hydroponics and plant health.
That’s why your storage tank needs air rocks.

what are air stones used for?
You may already be familiar with air stones if you use them in an aquarium.
Air rocks create tiny oxygen bubbles in your hydroponic tank as air passes through the rocks. Bubbles contribute to a wider distribution of dissolved oxygen throughout your system.
As a rule, oxygen bubbles are pushed through the system by an air pump, which we will discuss in detail in the next article. The stones themselves are immersed in water or nutrient solution inside your tank.
Note that the stone itself does not actually produce oxygen. They act as an oxygen dispersal mechanism.
what is the role of oxygen in hydroponics?
When plants grow outdoors in the soil, a natural process allows oxygen to enter the ground and get to the roots of the plants. For example, worms mix dirt, which dissipates oxygen, making it more accessible to the roots.
But why do plants need oxygen in their roots? Oxygen actually helps the process of assimilation of nutrients. If more oxygen is present, plants can better absorb minerals and even water.
This means that air stones can make your nutrient solution more effective. Without enough oxygen, plants tend not to develop their full potential, partly because they are not efficiently absorbing nutrients.
In addition to nutrient absorption, enhanced oxygen circulation around the roots also helps prevent the survival of harmful pathogens and plant disease.
Insufficient protection of pathogens from lack of oxygen is directly related to plant nutrition. When there is not enough oxygen, the plant does not get enough nutrients, and when it does not get enough nutrients, it produces stress hormones that make it less able to fight the ever-present bacteria.
air stone selection
Air stones come in several different sizes and shapes. However, it is not difficult to choose one thing. Use smaller stones for small installations and larger stones for large installations. As for the shape, choose one that roughly matches the shape of your tank. The most common form of this oxygen dispersant is rectangular or cylindrical.
You can try several different air stones and experiment with what shape and size best suits your nutrient tank.
Air rocks are by no means expensive. This is a small investment that can significantly affect the health of your plants. So come and check out our selection of air stones for indoor cultivators.
FAQ Hydroponic Air Stone
Is an air stone necessary for hydroponics? Air stones and diffusers are important components in hydroponic systems and are used with air pumps. Without additional oxygen in systems such as DWC and tidal, roots can suffocate.
How do air stones work with hydroponics? Air rocks create tiny oxygen bubbles in your hydroponic tank as air passes through the rocks. Bubbles contribute to a wider distribution of dissolved oxygen throughout your system. As a rule, oxygen bubbles are pushed through the system by an air pump, which we will discuss in detail in the next article.
Do NFT Hydroponics need air rocks? For NFT systems, I usually prefer to use an array of long thin air stones or 2-3 round air stones, as recommended below. It also comes with suction cups, so you don’t need to buy them separately.
Can you use an air pump for hydroponics? Plants need oxygen to survive. That is why it is very important to give them a sufficient amount of this substance in water supply systems, such as hydroponics or aquaponics. If so, then the air pump is your best friend.
Can you have too much air in the hydroponics? If there is too much oxygen, the roots have less motivation to grow more because they get everything they need with less surface area. This can then lead to plants producing less biomass, which means less leaf tissue. Thus, at some point, excess oxygen can actually lead to a decrease in growth.
Do air stones oxidize water? The bubbles created by the air stone not only fill the tank with oxygen, but also help the water to circulate.
Does carbonated water increase the pH in hydroponics? Most hydroponic systems require continuous aeration of the nutrient solution. When aeration of water (using air stones or recirculation), the concentration of chemicals in the water will really change and affect the pH. aeration leads to the release of CO2, which affects the overall pH of the solution.
Can I use an air stone without a pump? If you’re using Air stone, there’s no reason (other than aesthetic) why you can’t install a sponge filter at the end. The best of both worlds, that’s it. You need an air pump to pump air into your stone. So, you’ll need both, or the air pump and tube attached to the sponge work better.
How long should the air pump work in hydroponics? For deep-sea cultivation systems, it is best that the air pump works 24/7. For other hydroponic systems, it is sufficient to set the minimum on/off time to 30 minutes; thus, the use of a timer is also useful for tidal systems, drip systems and nutrient film technologies if you use an air pump.
How much air do hydroponic plants need? The answer is very simple-as a rule, an air pump should supply: 1 liter of air per minute for every 4 liters of nutrient solution.
Should a hydroponics pump run continuously? You need pump timers for ebb and flow (flooding and draining), drip systems, aeroponic systems, and sometimes some people also use them in NFT systems. The water cultivation system uses an air pump that can work 24/7 (therefore, no timer is used in the water cultivation system), and the wick system does not use a pump at all.
How often should I water the NFT? Watering cycles should be frequent, and it’s up to you to decide what exactly is needed. Some NFT farmers leave their systems continuous. Just in case, you can start watering every half hour and reduce until you find the right point. Most manufacturers choose to turn on for 1 minute / off for 5-10 minutes.
Which air stone is best suited for hydroponics? The best air stone for hydroponics is the cylindrical air stone Vivosun. 0,1 second place. 0.2 is the best overall. 0.3 is an excellent compromise. 0.4 1. Vivosun cylindrical water stone is the best overall. 0.5 2. Vivosun air stone disc with shell-second place. 0.6 3. aquaneat Rock air cylinders are a great compromise. 0.7 4. 0.8 5.
How do you saturate hydroponic water with oxygen? Air stones are an inexpensive and effective way to oxygenate water in a hydroponic garden. Using an air pump, you can pump air into an Air Stone, which splits the air into small bubbles. These bubbles help to saturate the water with oxygen and maintain the health of your plants.
How do you add air to hydroponics? The most common way for hydroponic gardeners to oxygenate the water in their hydroponic system is by using air stones. The reason is that air stones are inexpensive and easy to find for hydroponic gardeners. The air stone is connected to an air pump that pushes air through the stone.
