How to Build a Cheap DWC Hydroponic Cloner Plant clones are an excellent way to establish or increase your hydroponic garden, but they can be quite pricey. Luckily, constructing a hydroponic cloner is simple and inexpensive.

The steps for creating a DWC hydroponic clone are almost identical to those for creating a larger DWC hydroponic system. Here’s how to create a homemade, low-cost hydroponic cloner.

What You’ll Need to Build a Hydroponic DWC Cloning System

When selecting a tote for cloners of the DWC type, there are two things I look for. One is that the tote is reasonably sturdy, preventing the walls from bowing under the weight of the water. The second is that the lid has a sizable flat area where the net pots can be placed.

Constructing a DWC Hydroponic Cloner:

Step 1: Paint Your Tote

Even though roots will still develop if you don’t paint your tote, I would still advise doing so. Just like in nature, roots thrive when not exposed to light.

If you’re going to do it, painting the reservoir is the first step in constructing your hydroponic cloner. Simply turn it upside down and coat it thoroughly in black spray paint. To be safe, give it another coat after it has dried.

You can begin constructing your DWC hydroponic cloner while you’re waiting for the second coat to dry.

Step 2: Create holes for the air hose and net pots.

You should plan where the net pots will go before you begin to cut the holes for them. Since cuttings don’t require much room, you can arrange them fairly closely together.

Use your hole saw to cut out the holes after deciding where to place the net pots. Having high-quality net pots with a lip will be useful in this situation. Make sure the holes are large enough to accommodate the net pots but not so big that they fall through completely.

Replace the hole saw with a drill bit the same size as your air hose.Drill a hole through the end of the tote’s lid so that the air hose can pass through.

3. Configure the Air System

Next, the air system that provides oxygen to support root growth is put together.

You must cut your air hose to the desired length before assembling the air system. Mine is being cut at roughly 2 feet.

Connect your air stone to the air hose’s one end. Connect the check valve to the other end of the air hose by inserting it through the bottom of the tote lid’s drilled hole. To allow airflow, it’s crucial to make sure the check valve is pointing in the right direction.

The air hose should then be cut by a few more inches. This will join with the opposite end of the check valve. Now take that air hose’s open end and attach it to the air pump.

4. Add net pots, inserts, and cuttings.

The addition of your net pots and inserts completes the process of setting up your new DWC hydroponic system.

Simply place the clones in the foam inserts after they have been prepared, and then insert the insert into the net pot. Water should be added to the tote until it reaches the stem of the cutting. Connect the system now, then take a seat and watch the roots grow.
